Duration of Tour: 6 hours
Tour Description:
Whale sharks are the true behemoths of the fish world: they can grow longer than a bus (up to a purported 18 meters long) yet eat little animals no bigger than your finger - known as zooplankton- by filtering them out from the surrounding water, similar to a whale's feeding strategy. However, finding these big fish is not always that easy. Only 9 places in the world, all located in tropical waters, are known so far to have predictable whale shark visits, and Belize is one of the few chosen countries that the whale sharks predictably visit. Our Whale Shark Dive/Snorkel Adventure boat’s departure time for Operators is issued by Friends of Nature, a non-profit organization that manages the park. It is a one hour boat ride from Placencia through patch reef and coral islands to the Gladden Spit entrance. After gearing up and a safety briefing on dive/snorkel activities, which are done under the protective calm of the reef, we then proceed to the Whale Shark Zone. Lunch and surface interval are 1½ - 2 hours, after which we go back in the water for the second dive/snorkel. Gladden Spit is the most active aggregation site for a number of different specie of fish in Belize. It boasts the most predictable site for whale sharks in the region. It is a traditional fishing ground for local fishermen from at least five coastal villages.
